Last month I ticked off something huge from my bucket list:

A Trip to Namibia.

Where is Namibia you're asking? Fair question. Namibia is in Africa, located along the south-west coast, just above South Africa. It's a large, but sparsely populated country, in fact it's the second least densely populated country on this planet. Only two million people live in Namibia, but the country is twice the size of Germany. And speaking of Germany, Namibia used to be a German colony, until it became independent a few decades ago.

There is not much tourism in Namibia yet, only about one million people travel to Namibia per year. If you're looking for a travel destination that's not overrun by mass tourism yet, then Namibia might be an excellent choice.

Best Things to do in Namibia - Quick Overview

Short on time? Here’s a quick list of the most popular things to do and places to see in Namibia — plus links to book top-rated tours instantly.

When I visited South Africa last year, loads of people were telling me that I should go to Namibia if I would like to see something completely different. Many travelers I met in South Africa claimed that Namibia was their favorite country. Frankly, that made me quite curious.

I remember how I went online, searching for Namibia on Google images – to see how it looks like. In one word: Surreal. I was in awe. I haven't seen anything like that before, for me this was completely out of this world.

Namibia is one of the most surreal countries in the world: Imagine giant red dunes meet the Atlantic Ocean, endless desert roads stretch to the horizon, and wildlife roams free in national parks. Whether you’re here for a safari, a road trip, or simply to marvel at some of the most otherworldly landscapes on Earth, Namibia should be high on your bucket list.

Why You Should Travel to Namibia in 2026?

Why visit NamibiaNamibia is still one of Africa’s best-kept travel secrets with a stunning scenery and an abundance of wildlife. With vast open spaces, low population density, and excellent infrastructure for road trips, it’s ideal for both adventure travelers and those seeking tranquility. Here are four more reasons why you should plan a trip to Namibia:

Best Time to Visit Namibia

Namibia is a year-round destination, but the experience changes dramatically with the seasons:

The dry season lasts from May to October, and is generally considered the best time to visit, especially for safaris in Etosha National Park, as wildlife gathers in large numbers around the scarce waterholes. Days are sunny and warm, while nights can get chilly, making it perfect for outdoor adventures and stargazing under Namibia’s famously clear skies.

From November to March, the country enters the green season. While occasional heavy rains can make some roads challenging, this is when the desert landscapes come alive with fresh vegetation and dramatic cloud formations, creating stunning photo opportunities. If you don’t mind a bit of rain and want to experience Namibia at its most lush and vibrant, the green season can be just as rewarding as the dry months.

Travel Costs - How Much Does it Cost to Travel in Namibia?

Traveling in Namibia can be as affordable or as indulgent as you want it to be, depending on your style of travel. Whether you’re a backpacker camping on a budget, a couple road-tripping with a rental car, or a luxury traveler flying between safari lodges, you’ll find options that fit your budget.

Budget Travel in Namibia ($50–70 USD per day)

You can absolutely do Namibia on a budget if you camp, cook your own meals, and rent a small vehicle. . Many campsites are well-equipped with bathrooms and cooking facilities, and the experience of sleeping under Namibia’s star-filled skies is unforgettable. Self-driving and self-catering are not only economical but also give you maximum freedom to explore at your own pace.

Mid-Range Travel in Namibia ( $100–200 USD per day)

For those seeking more comfort, a budget of $100–200 USD per day allows you to stay in cozy guesthouses, enjoy guided tours, and rent a reliable SUV for road trips. Meals in local restaurants are reasonably priced, and accommodation often includes breakfast. This is the sweet spot for most travelers, including professional guides for certain activities, without giving up the flexibility of independent travel.

Luxury Travel in Namibia (from $300 USD per day)

On the other end of the spectrum, luxury travel in Namibia starts at $300 USD per day and can easily exceed $1,000 per day if you opt for exclusive safari lodges, private guides, or fly-in safaris. These high-end experiences often include game drives, gourmet meals, and breathtaking accommodations with panoramic views of the desert or waterholes teeming with wildlife. For many, a splurge on at least one luxury lodge stay is worth it, it’s a chance to experience Namibia’s wild beauty in ultimate comfort.

How to Get to Namibia

Most international travelers fly into Windhoek Hosea Kutako International Airport (WDH). I recommend Skycanner to find the cheapest flights to Namibia. Regional flights connect Namibia with South Africa, Botswana, and Zambia. Book early! Namibia is becoming more popular, and flights sell out quickly.

I flew with Qatar Airways who are flying daily from Doha to Windhoek which was an excellent experience.

It was also the first time for me to fly with the new Dreamliner (Boeing 787), it's such a beautifully designed airplane that feels very spacious inside. The windows are larger than in other airplanes, bringing more natural light, but also offering endless views above the clouds. If you want to sleep, you can dim your window at the push of a button.

I was fortunate to fly business class with  Qatar Airways, which is an experience in itself. The 22 inch wide seats provide a lot of privacy, including a storage for your personal items, power sockets and a side table. If you get tired, you can turn your seat into a flat bed within seconds.

Getting Around in Namibia

Namibia is a road trip paradise. Distances are long, and public transport is limited, so renting a car is the best option. For reliable car rental, I recommend DiscoverCars, you can pick up your car straight from the Airport in Windhoek. A 4x4 is recommended if you plan to explore remote areas like Damaraland or Kaokoland. Fuel stations can be far apart, always always fill up when you can.

A road trip through Namibia is surely an experience you won't forget. For me, it was one of the greatest road trips I've taken in  long time. The only regret I had was that I came only for a week. I highly recommend to plan as much time as you can to visit this magical country.

If planning your own Namibia itinerary is too overwhelming, I recommend this 10 day tour with all the highlights of Namibia, including all meals, transfers and accommodation.

Ready for an Adventure? Here are 5 Spectacular Places to See in Namibia!

Best Things To Do In Namibia

1. Etosha National Park

Etosha is one of Africa's greatest game reserves and the best place in Namibia to witness wildlife. Don't miss this National Park, because this is a true African safari experience.

The beauty of African national parks is that you almost always have the opportunity to see some of Africa’s Big Five wildlife: lions, elephants, rhinos, buffalos, and leopards. At Etosha, you just may get to see all five! But not only those, most likely you'll also see cheetahs, flamingos, hyenas, wildebeest, antelopes, giraffes, zebras and hundreds of bird species.

Etosha National Park | Travel Guide To Namibia - Things To Do And Places To Stay | via @Just1WayTicket

You can drive through the park by car, but make sure to get familiar with all the rules! For your safety I recommend to book a guided trip to Etosha! These are wild animals and you should be very cautious. Bring your camera and binoculars to get unforgettable shots and glimpses of the exotic wildlife.

For the ultimate experience I recommend to stay inside the park in one of three camps that are set up for tourists, but book your Etosha Park accommodation in advance to avoid arriving at a fully booked camp.

Be sure to visit the park’s watering holes, where all kinds of animals gather to hydrate.

Deadvlei and Sossusvlei | Travel Guide To Namibia - Things To Do And Places To Stay | via @Just1WayTicket

2. Sossusvlei & Deadvlei

This place is famous for the world’s tallest sand dunes and eerie white clay pans. Sossusvlei is the entry point for exploring the spectacular Namib Desert. A sea of red sand stretches across the Namib Desert, brilliant in bright oranges and shadowed indigo. The dunes are dry most of the time, but once or twice a decade the Tsauchab River winds through the dunes and disappears into the endless sand below.

The surrealistic Deadvlei in Sossusvlei is a gigantic clay pan with ancient trees, surrounded by the world's tallest dunes. If you can bear the heat, climb up the dunes, but make sure to bring enough water, and don't go up alone. Once you make it up there, you'll see an endless horizon with red colored dunes.

The barren romance of the dunes is accented by the occasional herd of gemsbok or ostrich, whose sandy footprints are quickly swept away by the restless desert winds. The wind changes constantly the shape of the desert landscape. It's truly an amazing place for photographers and certainly the most popular place to see in Namibia.

There's plenty day trips to book a tour to the Deadvlei, I recommend to come early in the morning to catch the golden hour.

3. Kalahari Desert

The Kalahari Desert offers magnificent views for travelers: Red dunes, golden grass, bizarre trees and deep blue skies, combined with an abundant animal life, including zebras, giraffes, oryx, ostriches and many more.

This vast wasteland is home to thousands of species of plant and animal life. It even supports the ancient lifestyle of resident tribes, such as the Bushmen. Even within this dry, apparently inhospitable ecosystem, the beauty of traditional life flourishes alongside the life cycles of the wild animals.

4. Swakopmund

There’s no other Namibian city like Swakopmund, a quirky coastal town with plenty of adventure activities. The town’s German architecture and vibes are rather unexpected in such stark desert surroundings, but somehow it works. Swakopmund is also a popular beach destination for Namibians.

Swakopmund | Travel Guide To Namibia - Things To Do And Places To Stay | via @Just1WayTicket

Although Swakopmund seems like a quiet town, there are actually many interesting things to do and places to visit - here are a few tours you can book online. Take a walk and visit the museums, go shopping at the art markets and try some of the excellent seafood restaurants. It's also a great base for exploring the Skeleton Coast, a dramatic, remote coastline with shipwrecks, seal colonies, and haunting beauty.

If you're up for some adventurous activities, you can find dune boarding, catamaran trip incl. dolphin watching, skydiving, kayaking, biking in the deserts, and camel riding opportunities. I rented an ATV and drove through the desert, which was a lot of fun, easily one of my favorite things to do in Namibia!

5. Kolmanskop

Kolmanskop is as eerie a place as they come. It's a ghost town in the middle of the Namib Desert, near the town of Lüderitz. Once you get there, you'll see homes filled with drifts of sand, glassless windows staring out at the vast desert like blind eyes.

Kolmanskop | Travel Guide To Namibia - Things To Do And Places To Stay | via @Just1WayTicket

Kolmanskop was once a bustling town with everything from theaters to sports complexes, but after a crash in their diamond-mining industry, the entire town packed up and left. The place was abandoned for a long time (since 1954), until it became a tourist attraction.

Nowadays, you can visit Kolmanskop, see what’s left of the town, and walk through the abandoned houses which are knee-deep filled with sand. It's a great place to see, if you're into surreal photography shots.

Suggested Namibia Itineraries

How many days you need in Namibia really depends on how much ground you want to cover. I suggest to plan minimum a week, but if you can, go for 2 weeks to get the maximum experience.

Here are some sample itineraries:

7 Days: Windhoek → Etosha → Swakopmund → Sossusvlei → Windhoek
With 7 days in Namibia, you can still see many of the highlights. A classic one-week route usually starts in Windhoek, continues to Etosha National Park for unforgettable safaris, before heading west to Swakopmund for adventure sports and German colonial charm, and finally south to the surreal dunes of Sossusvlei and Deadvlei before looping back to the capital.

10 Days: Add Lüderitz & Kolmanskop
If you have around 10 days in Namibia, you’ll have time to add a detour to the coast, visiting Lüderitz and the eerie ghost town of Kolmanskop, where abandoned houses are filled with desert sand — a photographer’s dream. This gives a great balance of wildlife, desert landscapes, and culture.

14 Days: Include Damaraland, Skeleton Coast, and Fish River Canyon
For travelers planning a 2-week Namibia itinerary, you can slow down and take in some of the country’s more remote gems. Explore the rugged landscapes of Damaraland, home to desert-adapted elephants and ancient rock engravings, continue north along the haunting Skeleton Coast, and venture south to hike the dramatic Fish River Canyon, the second largest canyon in the world. With two weeks, you can enjoy a mix of iconic landmarks and off-the-beaten-path regions, making your Namibia journey both diverse and unforgettable.

Where to stay in Namibia

Windhoek

I spent the first night after my arrival at the fabulous Hilton Windhoek Hotel, which was just perfect to relax after a long flight. The hotel has a fantastic rooftop bar and pool. Plenty of breakfast choices. Only the internet was a bit slow. The hotel is conveniently located near most of the main attractions in Windhoek.

Kalahari Desert
After exploring the Kalahari Desert we stayed a night at the Gondwana Kalahari Anib Lodge, which had the prettiest rooms I've seen in Namibia. Each bungalow has a nice patio with a swinging chair, facing the garden and the swimming pool.

Strand Hotel in Swakopmund

Namib Desert

After hiking the dunes in Sossusvlei we headed to Gondwana Namib Desert Lodge, and spent a night there. The surroundings of the hotel are pretty spectacular, right in front of your room you see mountains, tall trees, animals, and sand dunes. The hotel has a pool as well, but I didn't have time for a dip.

👉 Check here rates and availability.

Swakopmund

I spent two nights at the relatively new Strand Hotel Swakopmund, which was perfectly located, right on the beach. The rooms are spacious with a beautiful contemporary decor. There is a microbrewery and a beer garden at the hotel, make sure to visit for a beer tasting!
